Asia Pacific Activities
The Asia Pacific Section holds Conventions, Symposia and Regional Meetings for all members plus the IBD has created a network system for “Younger Members” which organises separate activities for these members.
Conventions
Conventions are held every two years. During recent years the conventions have been held in Singapore (1996 & 2000), Adelaide (2002), Hanoi, North Vietnam in 2004, Hobart in 2006, Auckland in 2008 and the Gold Coast in 2010. Delegates who attend enjoy a comprehensive technical programme of papers and posters, an exhibition of supplier’s services and goods, technical tours and an outstanding social programme. Delegates come from all over the world and the Conventions provide a great opportunity for brewers and suppliers to network with a wide cross-section of the International brewing community. Conventions are open to members and non-members of the IBD.
For full details of the next Convention please go to the Convention page on this Website.
Proceedings of these conventions are published and copies of the full Proceedings, or of individual papers, can be obtained from the Section Secretary. They are also distributed to all members of the section and can be viewed on this Website under Asia Pacific Activities.
Regional Symposia
Since 1997 the Section has held regional symposia generally being two-day sessions. They have been held every two years since then in the “off year” of the Convention and are designed to provide up to date information on the state of technology in the industry to those members who are not able to attend the conventions. They have normally been offered in two or three venues throughout the Section. Thus in 1999 they were held in Auckland, Queensland’s Gold Coast, Hanoi & Shanghai. In 2001 presentations were made in Auckland, Melbourne and Ho Chi Min City. 2003 saw symposia in Auckland, Sydney and Bangkok.
In 2005 a series of two-day symposia on "Hygiene in the Brewing Industry" were held in Auckland, Brisbane and Melbourne and these were a great success, being very well attended with very positive feedback.
In 2006 the Section initiated a mini-symposium on "Malting" in Melbourne during the Australian International Beer Awards and the success of this saw this concept expanded, in April 2007 to 3 hour sessions in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth with presentations from members of the Hops industry making presentations on "Hops in the Brewing Industry".
In recent times we have conducted "Flavour training" sessions with attendees being given theoretical and hands-on training in flavours in beer that are undesirable in the final products. The Section plans to continue to offer these sessions on a regular basis. Consult the Events section in this Website for the next program.
Regional Meetings
Each state has a Regional organisation that is responsible for arranging regular meetings for local members. These meetings are designed to enable members to get together and often take advantage of visitors from various parts of the industry to present on a technical topic as well as enabling members to meet in a semi-formal environment or to meet socially. The programme for anticipated meetings for the various regions can be found in the events Section of this Website.
Young Members Network.
Younger Members are defined as those who are under 35 years of age and are members of the IBD. The network has been created to provide specific opportunities for the newer/younger members of the industry to meet, exchange ideas and organise events/training opportunities that are of interest.
There are currently two awards available to younger members in Asia Pacific offering “scholarship” style opportunities for travel and/or study. Full details can be obtained from the Current News page of this Website.
