Incorporated Brewers Benevolent SocietyIncorporated Brewers' Benevolent Society
The IBBS was established as a "Friendly Society" in 1912, as the charitable arm of the Operative Brewers' Guild, which became the Incorporated Brewers' Guild, the Brewers' Guild in 1992 and then in 1996, finally, the International Brewers' Guild before amalgamating with the Institute of Brewing in 2000 into what became the Institute & Guild of Brewing and then the Institute of Brewing & Distilling as it is now known.
The Incorporated Brewers' Guild was founded by a group of Yorkshire brewers at a meeting in Leeds in 1906 and rapidly expanded its membership in 1911-2 and the formation of Sections throughout the UK. Its Statement of Purpose prior to amalgamation with the IOB was to provide a forum for the personal development for those involved in the production of beer for sale, so as to contribute to the continued improvement in product quality and operational efficiency to the benefit of the individual and the Industry.
The objectives of the IBBS are stated as:
The Objects of the Society shall be to provide by voluntary contributions for the relief or maintenance of any persons in the United Kingdom or Eire employed or formerly employed in the brewing profession and the dependants of such persons provided that in each case the Committee of the Society shall be satisfied that financial hardship exists.
A Member shall be any person employed or formerly employed in the brewing profession in the United Kingdom or Eire or was or had been a Member of the International Brewers' Guild prior to the winding up of that organisation.
The Committee reviews cases of those in need and allocates monies as required. We also keep an eye on other cases which only need contact. The definition of the Brewing profession has been expanded to include those covered by the IBD (i.e. Distillers).
