BEER & BREWING NEWS

ALCOHOL THE TARGET

Concern is being expressed in Australia that some anti-cancer organizations have ‘descended into full-blown paternalistic wowserism' with regard to alcohol. The Cancer Council was queried a few months ago when it said that alcohol in any quantity was probably carcinogenic and that people ideally should not drink it at all. Now the National Alliance for Action on Alcohol (NAAA), which represents about a dozen anti-cancer bodies, is lobbying federal ministers to support a number of measures, including unit pricing based on alcohol contents and the adoption of tobacco-style health warnings on packages of alcohol. Some health lobbyists think that the term ‘passive drinking', used in the UK to describe the social costs of problem drinking, could be used with effect in Australia in endeavours to mount more vigorous campaigns. [From Adelaide Sunday Mail, Jul 10, 2011]
The president of the Australian Hotels Association (NSW), Scott Leach, has also taken aim at the nanny state, saying an 'elitist moral minority' is being allowed to dictate Government policies on alcohol and gaming. [From The Shout Industry News, Jul 12, 2011]

WARNING LABELS

DrinkWise Australia has proudly announced the introduction of consumer health warnings for alcohol products that is the result of three years of a vigorous campaign which encourages bottlers to voluntarily include industry-approved warnings on labels, alerting consumers to the dangers associated with excessive drinking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy. The campaign uses three messages: ‘Is drinking harming yourself or others?', ‘It is safest not to drink while pregnant' and ‘Kids and alcohol don't mix'. The introduction of such labelling follows recommendations of the Blewett review which included generic warnings on alcohol packages.
Some think that such warnings are merely an attempt to divert attention from the possibility of compulsory warning labels and this attitude seems to be gaining a little traction. For example, the federal opposition takes the line that such warnings should be mandatory and more prominent and the Aust Medical Association (AMA) thinks the labels, although welcome, are inadequate and should be accompanied by significant restrictions on alcohol advertising and marketing.
About 14 countries, including the US, France and Germany, have mandatory health warnings on alcohol. In Australia, the warnings will be carried by the three biggest brewers, Foster's, Lion and Coopers and virtually all big wine and spirit brands including Jacob's Creek, Wyndham Estate, Bundaberg Rum and Gordon's Gin.

UK BEER SALES CONTINUE FALLING

Beer sales in the twelve months to June 2011 fell by 7.1% as the January VAT rise followed by a 7.2% beer duty in the recent Budget flattened the Royal Wedding effect, The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) reported in its latest UK Quarterly Beer Barometer on July, 26.

In the second quarter of 2011, beer sales fell by 9.8% with sales in supermarkets and shops down 15% and pub sales down 4.5%.

According to the Association, pub sales in April and May were boosted due to the Royal Wedding/Bank Holidays and warmer weather but the cumulative impact of tax rises, equating to 10 p per pint in pubs, in Q2 severely dampened this positive impact. The BBPA also points out that this year's comparator has been hit by the ‘World Cup effect' which boosted sales in both pubs and supermarkets in Q2 last year.

Brigid Simmonds, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association said: - Beer sales are a barometer of Britain's economic confidence. With last year's sales figures benefiting from the World Cup effect, which has historically boosted sales, sustaining volumes was always a challenge.

MOLSON COORS' NEW BEER FOR WOMEN

Molson Coors' new beer could be tapping into a £396m opportunity in the UK if it can achieve its aim of getting more women to buy into the category, said the brewer.

Molson Coors claims that 79 per cent of UK women never or rarely drink beer
Animée is the result of two years product development, driven by industry and consumer insights from the BitterSweet Partnership, a multi-million pound business set up by Molson Coors in 2009 to remove the gender imbalance around beer consumption and women.

- The research told us that we had to consider what we produced allayed concerns about the perceived fattening nature of beer and ensure it was served it in a way that appealed,” a spokesperson for Molson Coors told BeverageDaily.com.

According to Molson Coors, women are vital to growing the shrinking beer market, which currently attributes just 17 per cent of its sales to females.

The company claims that 79 per cent of women in the UK never or rarely drink beer.

"Women are an essential part of future growth for the beer industry and can no longer be ignored,” said Kristy McCready a spokesperson for Molson Coors in the UK and Ireland.

The four per cent - lightly filtered” ABV beer product is available in three variants, clear filtered, crisp rosé and zesty lemon.

The company said it achieved - a fresher and lighter taste” in the beer by reducing carbonation through the brewing process.

In addition, the firm said it opted for an ultra filtration process to make the beer lighter.

FOSTER'S

Australia's No. 1 brewer Foster's does not rule out takeover talks with global brewing giant SABMiller, but considers the spurned $10.4 billion offer was so low it was not worth discussing, Reuters reported.

Foster's new Chief Executive John Pollaers, facing a barrage of questions from analysts and shareholders at a business lunch, defended the board's decision to reject the deal and focus on restoring Foster's share in a declining Australian beer market.

"The value put on the table was so far away from reality that it wasn't worth engaging (with SABMiller)," Pollaers said.

But he added: "We are not saying that we would never engage. Our interest is the shareholders' interest."

Foster's, one of the last big prizes in a consolidating global beer market, has high margins and a 50 percent market share in Australia, where it brews the Victoria Bitter, Crown and Pure Blonde brands.

But it has been losing share as consumers switch from traditional brands to premium and craft beers, and on Friday Foster's launched a new logo, rebranding its main beer business with a minor change in name.
(E-malt.com Newsletter 30b of 29th July).

TAX WINDFALL

Foster's Group Ltd. may buy back shares or boost dividends after winning a dispute with the Australian Commissioner of Taxation, Bloomberg reported on July, 19.

Foster's will get A$390 million in cash refunds and interest, and is reviewing its "dividend policy and capital management options," Melbourne-based Foster's said. After including reduced future tax, the "cash benefit" may be more than A$835 million, the company said.

The Australian brewer, which had net debt of A$1.51 billion as of June 30, may return A$1 billion through a buyback or cash payout when it announces earnings August, 23, according to an analyst.

"The settlement de-stresses the acquisition case for SABMiller by a material amount," said Martin Deboo, an analyst at Investec Securities in London. The multiple of Foster's estimated 2011 earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization would be reduced to 11.6 times, which "compares favourably" to other beer deals, he said. OBITUARY

MARGARET HARVEY Hon FIBD

Margaret Harvey Hon FIBD.
(1924 – 2011)

The Institute of Brewing and Distilling Asia Pacific sadly wishes to record the passing of Margaret Harvey on July 27 after suffering a major stroke six weeks prior.

Margaret was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of 50 years of valued support she made to the IBD AP.

Margaret is the wife of John Vernon Harvey FIBD, the latter being an inaugural member the Asia Pacific Section formed in 1952, what was then called the Australian Section. John was then working for The South Australian Brewing Company in Adelaide, South Australia and reporting directly to Lance Walters who was the instigator for the development of the Section. Lance and John also developed the concept and organisation for the first Convention held in Adelaide in August 1953 when the Section consisted of only 89 members. That Convention attracted 67 delegates. John was the first Secretary/Treasurer of the Section from 1953 to 1957, a role which he undertook again in 1985 when he retired from professional life and which he continued until 1995. He retained the Editorial role until 1998 when he finally relinquished all roles with the Institute.

During the late 1980's and early 1990's, communications and data recording were comparatively simplistic but labour intensive and time consuming by today's standards. John & the Section were indebted to Margaret for being the organiser and contact for membership records as well as John's confidante. The records were established & maintained by Margaret. Often the initial telephone contact was with Margaret as the Secretariat operated from their home. Margaret was usually the direct contact with members and enquirers and she would receive and relay messages and provide timely information and instructions on membership matters. From 1953, Section membership grew from 89 to 628 in 1995 when John handed the secretarial mantle on to John Armitt. Even by 1995, collation of Institute data on a computer database was in its infancy and the Institute records were all on card-index systems, which were meticulously managed by Margaret. Furthermore, communications were all by post, fax or telephone which entailed considerably more work than now-a-days when emails dominate. Margaret was, invariably, the person answering the telephone and handling the post. Therefore, for many members, Margaret was the person to contact who would know what to do etc when John was not available.

The first Convention that was held in Adelaide in August 1953 saw many delegates arrive with their partners although it was not planned as an event with a partners' programme. Margaret, who provided a focus and a source of local knowledge & support, looked after these ladies and welcomed them. This set the tone for future Conventions and, when possible, Margaret has accompanied John to later Conventions, Congresses etc and was instrumental in the eventual establishment of a formal partner programme which has done so much to establish the success of Section Conventions.

Regional meetings were established within the Section as a means of communication and of the sharing of knowledge and information with members who did not get the opportunity of attending Conventions or overseas Congresses. These events have flourished in South Australia and many a young member has fond memories of being warmly welcomed to their first meeting by John & Margaret and helped to extend the fellowship and camaraderie so well recognised within the brewing industry around the world.

There are many people who have contributed to the success of the Asia Pacific Section since its inception in 1952. The sterling work of John Harvey has been recognised and honoured. It was also fitting that the Institute recognised the invaluable honorary assistance of Margaret Harvey had made in granting her Honorary Fellowship.

Margaret will be sadly missed by John, her family and all members of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.

We extend our sympathy and condolences to John and family.

MR GENEROSITY
Several men are in the locker room at the golf club. A mobile phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen.

MAN: 'Hello'

WOMAN: 'Darling, it's me. Are you at the club ?'

MAN: 'Yes'

WOMAN: 'I am at Bluewater and I've found this beautiful leather coat. It's only $1000. Is it OK if I buy it?'

MAN: 'Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.'

WOMAN: 'I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership on the way here and saw the new 2010 Models. I saw one I really liked.'

MAN: 'How much ?'

WOMAN: '$85,000

MAN: 'OK, but for that price please make sure you haggle for all the optional extras.'

WOMAN: 'Great ! Oh, and one more thing...the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking $950,000.

MAN: 'Well, if you still like it that much, why not make an offer of $900 K. They will probably take it. If not, we can go the extra 50 thousand if you think it's worth it.'

WOMAN: 'OK. I'll see you later ! I love you so much !'

MAN: 'Bye ! I love you, too.'

The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths agape.

He turns and asks:

" Anyone know who this phone belongs to ?"

THE FISHING HUSBAND
Two men are out just fishing quietly and drinking beer.

Almost silently, so as not to scare the fish, Bob says, 'I think I'm gonna divorce my wife', she hasn't spoken to me in over 2 months.'

Charles continues slowly sipping his beer then thoughtfully says, 'You better think it over, Bob - Women like that are hard to find.'

ANOTHER FISHING STORY
A guy is 75 years old and loves to fish.
He was sitting in his boat the other day when he heard a voice say,

'Pick me up.'

He looked around and couldn't see anyone.

He thought he was dreaming when he heard the voice say again,

'Pick me up.'

He looked in the water and there, floating on the top, was a frog.

The man said, 'Are you talking to me?'

The frog said, 'Yes, I'm talking to you.'

Pick me up then, kiss me and I'll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen.

I'll make sure that all your friends are envious and jealous because I will be your bride!'

The man looked at the frog for a short time, reached over, picked it up carefully, and placed it in his front pocket.

The frog said, 'What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said? I said kiss me and I will be your beautiful bride.'

He opened his pocket, looked at the frog and said,

'Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog.'

With age comes wisdom.

Answer from Above.:
In all of the words listed, if you take the first letter, place it at the end of the word, and then spell the word backwards, it will be the same word. Did you figure it out? No? Then send this to more people
and stump them as well. Then, you'll feel better too.
