There are now only 6 weeks to go to our Asia Pacific Convention. The Organising Committee met earlier this week on the Gold Coast to firm up most of the arrangements and I can assure members that this will be a Convention not to be missed.
We have had very strong support from our Sponsors, there is an excellent Technical and Poster programme, the Exhibition is fully booked out and the Social activities can only be described as fantastic.
Registrations have been very strong so members are advised to register early and accommodation at the Marriott Hotel is filling fast. Similarly enrolments for the Flavour training and Craft Brewers forum have been brisk and as the Flavour training session in particular has a cap on the number of members we can accept, registration for this, should be done promptly.
One highlight we can disclose at this stage will be at the final Gala Dinner where we will be conducting the inaugural IBD Idol competition which will be hosted by Mark Holden who has been part of TV's Idol in the past. Members who believe they have some entertainment talent are invited to nominate to participate in the competition on the night with some amazing prizes on offer. A band will be playing on the night and they will accompany contestants- there will be rehearsals with the band in the afternoon of the Dinner. The audience will be voting to decide the winner.
Further details can be obtained from the attachment to this Newsletter and this also has a link to enable members to register to enter the competition. We already have a couple of entrants so we encourage anybody who can sing or dance or entertain in some way to enter - it will be a great night!!!
The link below will take you to the Registration pages and the various links to the Registration form, Convention agenda and other details are available from this page.

HEINEKEN ACQUIRES MEXICO'S FEMSA
Heineken has acquired the beer operations of the Mexican drinks giant FEMSA in exchange for a 20 per cent share in the Dutch brewer.
The total transaction, which is valued at $7.437bn, will give Heineken a major new platform for growth in Latin America.
Under the deal, Heineken will take charge of Fomento Economico Mexicano (FEMSA) Cerveza, and its beer brands, including Dos Equis, Sol, and Tecate.
In exchange, Heineken will assume the $2.1bn debt at FEMSA Cerveza, and FEMSA will receive 43m shares in Heineken Holding, valued at $32.92, and 72m shares in Heineken, valued at $29.38.
Heineken said the deal presents the company with several - compelling strategic benefits”. (Derived from FoodAndDrinkEurope.com).
Growth plans
These include the opportunity to expand into growing and profitable beer markets in Mexico, Brazil and the US, where FEMSA Cerveza has an established following among Hispanic drinkers.
The brewer said other advantages include scope to grow the Heineken brand in Latin America, access to strong revenues and cash flows, increased exposure to emerging markets and ownership of strong international beer brands.
Heineken CEO Jean-Francois van Boxmeer said: - Through this deal we become much stronger, more competitive player in Latin America, one of the world's most profitable and fastest growing beer markets.
- The acquisition strengthens considerably our position within the beer market, expands our leading portfolio of leading international brands and enhances our leading position in the US import market.”
The Heineken CEO said the deal also marks the next stage in the company's strong association with FEMSA.
AMERICANS FALL OUT OF LOVE WITH IMPORTED BEERS
Americans are drinking less imported beer in the recession but Mintel research suggests that blame cannot be leveled at the economy alone.
Imported beers have been a big driver for growth in the US over the last decade with volumes ballooning 13 per cent between 2004 and 2009, according to Mintel data.
But that long term trend disguises a more recent drop in demand in 2007/2008 as volume sales of imports fell 5.4 per cent to 386m cases.
Undoubtedly the recession has an important part to play in this story of falling volumes but there may be other factors at play that caste doubt on the ability of big foreign brewers to recapture old growth rates.
The contrast between the 5.4 per cent decline in imported volumes and the 1.6 per cent increase in domestic volumes is certainly a cause for concern among beer exporters to the US.
Innovation
A Mintel analyst told BeverageDaily.com that a lack of innovation was one stumbling block, as imported beers may be slightly out of tune with recent trends like the growing popularity of light beers, light flavoured beers, and seasonal drinks.
In addition, the analyst said that innovations in domestic beer have attracted consumers who may have previously preferred imported brands.
Results of a recent Mintel survey of 1,880 consumers in the US support this idea as only 24 per cent of respondents said they preferred to drink imported beer, and, when asked to explain why, 42 per cent said domestic - just tastes better” than imported.
Competition
One of the great recent success stories on the US market are craft beers. Like imported beers these products carry a higher than average price tag but unlike their rivals from abroad they have managed to attract more consumers during the recession.
Mintel said craft beers are creating the sort excitement on the domestic market that imports once did and this buzz is translating into increased market share.
On the back of double digit volume growth, craft beer has increased its share of the US market from 6.2 per cent in 2006 to 7.5 per cent in 2008, according to Mintel. And over the past year there is no sign that craft beers have been stopped in their tracks by the recession.
Mintel predicts that crafts will continue to be major growth drivers in the US over the next five years, with seasonal and super-premium products tipped to perform especially well.
To mount an effective counter-attack imported beers will have to work harder to tap into domestic trends such as the movement to lighter beers and seasonal or limited edition products. Mintel also recommends that imported beers emphasize their price competitiveness compared to most craft beers.

PROPOSED EXCISE TAX CHANGES
The prices of full-strength beer and wine would rise under the long-awaited and sweeping overhaul of Australia's haphazard alcohol tax regime being considered by the Federal Government. In a change that could boost the budget bottom line by as much as $2.9 billion over four years, a review of the tax system headed by Treasury boss Ken Henry is believed to recommend replacing Australia's antiquated and complex alcohol excise regime with a simpler 'volumetric' system based on alcohol content. It is surmised that, in an acknowledgement of the health and social costs inflicted by alcohol abuse, Treasury favours a stepped approach, with tax rates progressively increasing according to alcohol content. The thresholds are believed be 3.5, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 22% abv. Australia's alcohol excise regime is one of the most complex in the world, with an array of rates and rules for different products. The amount of excise on beer, for example, currently varies depending on whether it is sold in keg or bottle and brandy is taxed at a concessional rate compared with other spirits. Small wineries receive generous tax concessions, which have been blamed for propping up many uneconomic businesses and encouraging a grape glut, yet micro-breweries must directly compete with multinationals such as Fosters and Lion Nathan. [from Sunday Age, Jan 17 via microbrewing.com.au/noticeboard, Jan 18, 2010]
COOPERS Exceptional growth in interstate markets helped Coopers achieve record sales in 2009 and the company hopes to reach beer sales of 600,000hl in 2010. Most of the increase occurred in the latter half of the year and Coopers now have 3.4% of the Australian beer market; Pale Ale accounts for about 65% of their beer sales. [from Adelaide Advertiser, Jan 08, 2010]
NEW BEER Joining the ‘dry beer' club, Coopers launched Coopers Clear at a function at the National Wine Centre, Adelaide on Jan 2; national distribution will be supported by an Australia Day campaign.. The all-malt lager is packaged in clear glass bottles and ‘Euro'-style cans and has only 1g carbohydrate/100mL with 4.5% abv. It joins CUB's Pure Blonde, Hahn Super Dry & Toohey's Extra Dry in competition for the growing dry/low-carb market. [from Adelaide Advertiser Jan 22, 2009 & other sources]
FOSTER'S GROUP INDIA: Australia's iconic brand VB has been launched in India in 375mL bottles and cans through distributor Pearls Wines, who have targeted the brand at 12% of the Indian beer market by 2012 and 26% by 2014; the total Indian beer market is growing at about 15% per annum. [from E-Malt Industry news, Jan 20, 2010]

HEAD BREWER WEST COAST BREWERY Westport NZ New Beer Development Program
We seek the services of a Head Brewer at our Westport Brewery. It may well be a lifestyle choice for someone to get the better of two worlds. The relaxed West Coast lifestyle with all its serenity and beauty laced with many life style options, including hunting, fishing, climbing, tramping, boating, kayaking, whitebaiting and Cray fishing.
(The matesmanship and friendship of the West Coast is legendary and every person who has a mission to experience and sample the great life should include at least a stint on the West Coast.)
Plus the opportunity to be part of a fast growth company designed to grow and be at the leading edge of beer and brand development.
The West Coast has long been regarded as the true home of the beer lover, going back into the six o'clock closing days, West Coast pubs literally snubbed their noses at the idea and stayed open anyway.
From there the tradition continued with arguably the highest ratio of pubs to population anywhere in the country. West Coasters take their drinking and their beer seriously and the West Coast Brewery has established a firm and growing stronghold for its brands here.
Those brands are extending out with the company now exporting to four countries with more coming on board in 2010.
The West Coast Brewery is the proud sponsor of the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival where around 15, 000 litres is consumed in the seven hours the event operates. It requires 6 multipourers and 120 people to facilitate the bar. Hokitika Wildfoods is rated as one of the top 300 events in the world and is set to grow and expand further.
Westcoast Brewing is the parent company and has gone through massive and extremely challenging growth in the last twelve months. However it has significant partners coming on board with substantial additional funding coming into play in the forthcoming year.
While the development of our own outlets has been part of our forward strategies, we are now shifting our focus to the building of and acquisition of strategically placed breweries.
At least one of these breweries will be built to carbon neutral standards and be part of a bigger development called The New Zealand Rain Forest Centre.
To this end we are seeking a Head Brewer with the skills and talents to develop a new range of craft beers. While the emphasis will be on Carbon neutral beers, the development of a wider range of products is required.
The person we seek will have the capacity to see the bigger picture the company has and share the vision and be a part of the team that breaks new ground in the brewing industry both in NZ and internationally.
A sister company in Australia has been mooted to develop, brew and market a complete Green Fields brand for the Australian market and is planned to emerge in 2011/2012.
Passion for beer is at the head of our list of requirements that we seek. Closely followed by depth of experience and willingness to learn and be a critical part of our breaking new ground.
The position is loaded with potential for the right person to be a part of a small but growing significant company going forward.
For an initial chat please email Paddy Sweeney the company's CEO on paddy@westcoastbrewing.com with your contact details and a brief overview of your experience.
SECURITY LEVELS
-The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.
The Scots raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards" They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the frontline in the British army for the last 300 years.
The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralysing the country's military capability. It's not only the French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."
The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose".
Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
Americans meanwhile are carrying out pre-emptive strikes, on all of their allies, just in case.
New Zealand has also raised its security levels - from "boa" to "BAAAA!". Due to continuing defense cutbacks (the airforce being a squadron of spotty teenagers flying paper aeroplanes and the navy some toy boats in the Prime Minister's bath), New Zealand only has one more level of escalation, which is "Shit, I hope Australia will come and rescue us". In the event of invasion, New Zealanders will be asked to gather together in a strategic defensive position called "Bondi".
Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be all right, mate". Three more escalation levels remain, "Crikey!', "I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend" and "The barbie is cancelled". So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GETTING MARRIED Jacob, age 92, and Rebecca, age 89, living in Devon , are all excited about their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way they pass a chemist. Jacob suggests they go in. Jacob addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?" The pharmacist answers, "Yes." Jacob: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?" Pharmacist: "Of course we do." Jacob: "How about medicine for circulation?" Pharmacist: "All kinds " Jacob: "Medicine for rheumatism?" Pharmacist: "Definitely." Jacob: "How about suppositories?" Pharmacist: "You bet!" Jacob: "Medicine for memory problems, arthritis, and Alzheimer's?" Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety. The works." Jacob: "What about vitamins, sleeping pills, Geritol, antidotes for Parkinson's disease?" Pharmacist: "Absolutely.." Jacob: "Everything for heartburn and indigestion?" Pharmacist: "We sure do." Jacob: "You sell wheelchairs and walkers and canes?" Pharmacist: "All speeds and sizes." Jacob: "We'd like to use this store for our wedding presents list..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TEACHERS REPORT CARDS
These are actual comments made on students' report cards by teachers in the New York City public school system. All teachers were reprimanded (but, boy, are these funny!)
1. Since my last report, your child has reached rock bottom and has started to dig..
2. I would not allow this student to breed.
3. Your child has delusions of adequacy.
4. Your son is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot.
5.. Your son sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them.
6. The student has a 'full six-pack' but lacks the plastic thing to hold it all together..
7. This child has been working with glue too much.
8. When your daughter's IQ reaches 50, she should sell.
9. The gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn't coming.
10.. If this student were any more stupid, he'd have to be watered twice a week.
11. It's impossible to believe the sperm that created this child beat out 1,000,000 others.
12.. The wheel is turning but the hamster is definitely dead.
These are actual comments made by 16 Police Officers.
The comments were taken off actual police car videos around the country:
16. 'You know, stop lights don't come any redder than the one you just went through.'
15. 'Relax, the handcuffs are tight because they're new. They'll stretch after you wear them a while.'
14. 'If you take your hands off the car, I'll make your birth certificate a worthless document.'
13. 'If you run, you'll only go to jail tired.'
12. 'Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? Because that's the speed of the bullet that'll be chasing you..'
11. 'You don't know how fast you were going? I guess that means I can write anything I want to on the ticket, huh?'
10. 'Yes, sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don't think it will help. Oh, did I mention that I'm the shift supervisor?'
9. 'Warning! You want a warning? O.K, I'm warning you not to do that again or I'll give you another ticket.. '
8. 'The answer to this last question will determine whether you are drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or a dog?'
7. 'Fair? You want me to be fair? Listen, fair is a place where you go to ride on rides, eat cotton candy and corn dogs and step in monkey poop.'
6. 'Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a toaster oven.'
5. 'In God we trust, all others we run through NCIC.'
4. 'How big were those 'two beers' you say you had?'
3. 'No sir, we don't have quotas anymore. We used to, but now we're allowed to write as many tickets as we can.'
2. 'I'm glad to hear that the Chief (of Police) is a personal friend of yours. So you know someone who can post your bail.'
AND THE WINNER IS....
1. 'You didn't think we give pretty women tickets? You're right, we don't... Sign here.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------- A COUPLE OF IRISH JOKES Mary Clancy goes up to Father O' Grady after his Sunday morning service, and she's in tears.
He says, - So what's bothering you, Mary my dear?"
She says, "Oh, Father, I've got terrible news. My husband passed away last night."
The priest says, "Oh, Mary, that's terrible. Tell me, Mary, did he have any last requests?"
She says, "That he did, Father."
The priest says, "What did he ask, Mary?” She says, He said, 'Please Mary, put down that damn gun...' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road.
A cop pulls him over. " So," says the cop to the driver, where have ya been?" "Why, I've been to the pub of course," slurs the drunk. " Well," says the cop, "it looks like you've had quite a few to drink this evening."
" I did all right," the drunk says with a smile. "Did you know," says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms across his chest, that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?"
"Oh, thank heavens," sighs the drunk. "For a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Register now for the Convention and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in March .
Happy Brewing
