RETAILERS' PRIVATE BEER BRANDS
Australia's retail behemoth set to increase sales of private beer brands Coles and Woolworths are set to prise tens of millions of dollars from big brewers through house-brand beers, Adelaide Now reported this week.
The Australian retail behemoths have been advised they have the potential to significantly increase sales of private labels despite falling beer consumption.
Liquor industry analysts predict the retailers - believed to reap at least A$100 million a year in sales of own-brand beer - can increase their market share from 2.5 to 4 per cent.
Supermarket-owned wine labels now account for almost 20 per cent of wine sales in Australia. The supermarket giants have antagonised food and beverage companies by aggressively rolling out new home-brand labels in recent years.
Woolworths, which last year stated its wish to double private label sales across all products, has clearly been most aggressive in the beer market and this month added a new label, Sail & Anchor, to its range.
The group's liquor buying manager, Steve Donahue, said beer sales were growing. Market research indicates industry-wide sales fell more than 5 per cent in the year to November.
Woolworths has also moved into the booming cider market using the Sail & Anchor brand. [From E-malt.com newsletter 4b of 27th Jan 2012]

OTHER NSW COMPANY NEWS
New start-ups scheduled for 2012 include Casey's Brewery (Penrith) and Badlands Brewery (Orange). [From Beer & Brewer Aus & NZ #20, Autumn 2012] ************************************************************ BREWCORP WA.
Two noted breweries, Feral and Nail, are setting up a joint facility – Brewcorp – to boost production and availability of draught and packaged beers, including Feral Hop Hog IPA, Feral White, Nail Ale and Nail Stout. They have ordered a new 50hL brewery and leased a warehouse in Bayswater. Brewcorp is not a merger but a pragmatic way for both companies to grow separately from one plant. Brendan Varis's modest Feral brewery at Baskerville has expanded as far as possible with new tanks and shed add-ons. John Stallwood's Nail production, at the Edith Cowan University teaching brewery at Joondalup, is so severely limited that bottled beers are released only rarely. For Feral, the new shared brewery means a capacity increase from 4,000hL a year to 25,000hL. [From MB News 126, Jan 27, 2012] ************************************************************

PETER FRANKLYN – 1926-2012
Peter passed away on Tuesday 31st January. His funeral was held in Perth on 7th February.
He was an active member of the IBD and a very keen attender of regional meetings & events since 1952.
He started work at the Merredin brewery in 1941, then part of the Kalgoorlie Brewery & Ice Company Ltd which was sold to Swan in 1945. Peter moved to Swan Brewery, Perth in 1949 until 1958 when he went to the Stuart Brewery in Darwin for Swan until 1963. He was, to a great extent, the ‘face' of Swan in the Northern Territory and contributed in a big way to its success.
He transferred back to Perth in 1963 and was very actively involved in the transfer to the new Canning Vale site in 1978 as second brewer and then, before his retirement in 1985, he was packaging manager. His brother, Reg Franklyn was brewer and then manager of Kalgoorlie Brewery for Swan until it was closed in 1983.
Peter joined up & served briefly in the RAAF towards the end of the 2nd World War and served overseas - well Tasmania - just prior to the end of the war.
He was a very keen and good sportsman - he played for Claremont Football Club (Australian Rules Football) in his youth and was still playing tennis up until late 2011 at 86.
He was a devoted family man, married to his beloved Mary, who died late last year, for 63 years and leaves a large family of children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren.

THE BANKING CRISIS EXPLAINED Young Paddy bought a donkey from a farmer for £100.
The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day...
The next day he drove up and said, 'Sorry son, but I have some bad news. The donkey's died.'
Paddy replied, 'Well then just give me my money back.'
The farmer said, 'Can't do that. I've already spent it.'
Paddy said, 'OK, then, just bring me the dead donkey.'
The farmer asked, 'What are you going to do with him?'
Paddy said, 'I'm going to raffle him off.'
The farmer said, 'You can't raffle a dead donkey!' Paddy said, 'Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anybody he's dead.'
A month later, the farmer met up with Paddy and asked, 'What happened with that dead donkey?'
Paddy said, 'I raffled him off.
I sold 500 tickets at two pounds apiece and made a profit of £898' The farmer said, 'Didn't anyone complain?'
Paddy said, 'Just the guy who won.
So I gave him his two pounds back.'
Paddy now works for the Royal Bank of Scotland .
There now, it's as easy as that. *********************************************************** SENSITIVE AUSSIE BLOKES
Three aussie blokes working up on an outback mobile phone tower: Mongrel, Coot and Bluey . As they start their descent, Coot slips, falls off the tower and is killed instantly..
As the ambulance takes the body away, Bluey says, 'Well, mate, someone's gotta go and tell Coot's wife.
Mongrel says, 'OK, I'm pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I'll do it.' Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of Beer.
Bluey says, 'Where'd you get the grog, Mongrel?' 'Coot's wife gave it to me,' Mongrel replies. 'That's unbelievable, you told the Missus her husband was dead and she gave you a case of beer?' 'Well, not exactly', Mongrel says. 'When she answered the door, I said to her, "you must be Coot's widow." She said, 'You must be mistaken.. I'm not a widow.' Then I said, 'I'll betcha a case of beer you are..'
Aussies are good at that sensitive stuff. ************************************************************ ARTHRITIS A drunken man who smelled strongly of alcohol sat down on a subway next to a priest.
The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a half-empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes the man turned to the priest and asked, 'Say Father, what causes arthritis?' The priest replies, 'My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, contempt for your fellow man, sleeping around with prostitutes and lack of a bath.' The drunk muttered in response, 'Well, I'll be damned, ' Then returned to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. 'I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?' The drunk answered, 'I don't have it, Father. I was just reading here that the Pope does.' MORAL: Make sure you understand the question before offering the answer. ************************************************************ HOW TO START A FIGHT WITH YOUR WIFE
One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift... The next year, I didn't buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied, "Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!" And that's how the fight started..... ________________________________________ My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, "Do you know him?" "Yes", she sighed, "He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since." "My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?" And then the fight started... ________________________________________
When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I always had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer.. Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point. When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scissors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway." The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp. ************************************************************
