PRIVATE LABEL BEERS IN EUROPE
Private label beers are gaining share on their branded rivals in 2009 as the recessionary conditions have made them more appropriate to consumers across the region. A new report on private label beers in Europe from specialist beverage research agency Canadean suggests however that although share may be rising, volumes are not. Share is growing because private label products are falling at a slower rate than branded products, Canadean analysts claim.
2009 has been a traumatic year for the beer sector in West Europe, with Canadean anticipating a drop of around 3% in overall volumes. Private label beers are expected to drop at a more modest rate of less than 1%. Beer is well represented in the on-premise and it is the sharp decline in bars and restaurants that has pulled the overall beer sector down.
Private label beers are almost exclusively sold in supermarkets and have consequently been shielded from the full force of the downturn.
It is the level of beer volumes going through the on-premise that has contributed to the low level of private label penetration in the beer market; 7% penetration for beer compares to well over 20% for soft drinks.
E-malt.com newsletter 50b on 11 Dec 09.
AUSTRALIAN PRIVATE LABEL BEERS COLES BLONDE BOMBSHELL Supermarket giant Coles (owned by Wesfarmers) is heading for a showdown with major brewers as its private label low-carb beer Maxx Blonde comes up against leading brands. Coles' newcomer competes with (amongst others) Pure Blonde (CUB) and Hahn Super Dry & Boag's Classic Blonde (Lion Nathan), using ads inviting drinkers to compare it with Pure Blonde in particular. It is reported that Coles intends to increase sales of private-label beers and wines from 12 to 19% of total liquor sales; it maintains that Maxx Blonde is ‘significantly different' from other brands even though its packaging is very similar to Pure Blonde. CARLTON & UNITED BREWERIES
As part of the ongoing streamlining of organisational structure, Grant Peck has been appointed to the new position of CUB Supply Director, combining the roles of Production Director and RSS Director, with responsibility for supply planning, logistics, technical services, operations (Abbotsford, Campbelltown, Cascade, Pacific & Yatala) and continuous improvement. David Grant, previously Production Director, will leave CUB early in 2010 after nearly 25 years with the group.
It was announced in E-malt.com newsletter 52 on 23 December 09 that Alex Stevens, Managing Director of the Australia-Pacific beer business has resigned due to ill health. Until further notice, Ian Johnston Foster's CEO will act as Managing Director CUB.
Alex Stevens was appointed MD of the Australian beer, cider and spirits business in February 09 when the group announced it was structurally separating its beer and wine businesses after failing to sell the struggling wine unit.
LION NATHAN
Kirin Holdings Co. plans to invest roughly ¥23 billion (about A$ 280 million) to support beer production in Australia and New Zealand through its newly fully-acquired Lion Nathan Ltd. [from E-Malt.Com Flash 48b, Nov 29, 2009]
BOAGS BREWERY- New brewery and new beer.
Boag's new brewery in Launceston, opened on Dec 1, increases the site capacity to 1 million hL. The new plant can be operated by a single person using computer-control and has heat recovery mechanisms which almost halve energy use. New beer Boag's Pure, a full-strength lager at 4.5%abv, is brewed from Tasmanian barley malt, hops and water only with local Southern Hallertau hops used late in the boil to provide aroma. [from The Mercury, Hobart, Dec 2 via the Australian Beverage Industry Digest No 54]

THREE SISTERS 3 Mischievous old sisters were sitting on a bench outside a nursing home
When an old man walked by.
And one of the old sisters yelled out saying, 'We bet we can tell exactly how old you are.' The old man said, 'There is no way you can guess it, you old fools.' One of the old sisters said, 'Sure we can! Just drop your pants and under shorts and we can tell your exact age.' Embarrassed just a little, but anxious to prove they couldn't do it, he dropped his drawers. The sisters asked him to first turn around a couple of times and to jump up and down several times. Then they all piped up and said, 'You're 87 years old!' Standing with his pants down around his ankles, the old gent asked,'How in the world did you guess?' Slapping their knees and grinning from ear to ear, the three old sisters happily yelled in unison - - 'We were at your birthday party yesterday! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- GOTTA LOVE A DRUNK......
A man and his wife are awakened at 3 o'clock in the morning by a loud pounding on the door........ The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain, is asking for a push.
- Not a chance," says the husband, "It is three o'clock in the morning." He slams the door and returns to bed. "Who was that?" asked his wife. "Just some drunk guy asking for a push," he answers. "Did You help him?" she asks. "No way. It is three o'clock in the morning and it is pouring rain outside!!." His wife said, "Can't you remember about three months ago when we broke down and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, go give him a push and you should be ashamed of yourself!" The man does as he is told (of course!), gets dressed and goes out into the pouring rain. He calls out into the dark, "Hello! Are you still here?"
"Yes," comes back the answer. "Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband. "Yes! Please!" comes the reply from the dark "Where are you?" asks the husband "Over here on the swing!!" replies the drunk." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- POLITICAL CORRECTNESS Nelson: "Order the signal, Hardy."
Hardy: "Aye, aye Sir."
Nelson: "Hold on, that's not what I dictated to Flags. What's the meaning of this?" Hardy: "Sorry Sir?" Nelson (reading aloud): "' England expects every person to do his or her duty, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religious persuasion or disability.' - What gobbledegook is this?" Hardy: "Admiralty policy, I'm afraid, Sir. We're an equal opportunities employer now. We had the devil's own job getting ' England ' past the censors, lest it be considered racist." Nelson: "Gadzooks, Hardy. Hand me my pipe and tobacco." Hardy: "Sorry Sir. All naval vessels have now been designated smoke- free working environments." Nelson: "In that case, break open the rum ration. Let us splice the mainbrace to steel the men before battle." Hardy: "The rum ration has been abolished, Admiral. Its part of the Government's policy on binge drinking." Nelson: "Good heavens, Hardy. I suppose we'd better get on with it. Full speed ahead." Hardy: "I think you'll find that there's a 4 knots speed limit in this stretch of water." Nelson: "Damn it man! We are on the eve of the greatest sea battle in history. We must advance with all dispatch. Report from the crow's nest please." Hardy: "That won't be possible, Sir. Nelson: "What?" Hardy: "Health and Safety have closed the crow's nest, Sir.. No harness, and they said that rope ladders don't meet regulations. They won't let anyone up there until a proper scaffolding can be erected." Nelson: "Then get me the ship's carpenter without delay, Hardy." Hardy: "He's busy knocking up a wheelchair access to the fo'c'sle Admiral." Nelson: "Wheelchair access? I've never heard anything so absurd." Hardy: "Health and safety again, sir. We have to provide a barrier-free environment for the differently abled." Nelson: "Differently abled? I've only one arm and one eye and I refuse even to hear mention of the word. I didn't rise to the rank of admiral by playing the disability card." Hardy: "Actually, Sir, you did. The Royal Navy is under represented in the areas of visual impairment and limb deficiency." Nelson: "Whatever next? Give me full sail. The salt spray beckons." Hardy: "A couple of problems there too, Sir. Health and safety won't let the crew up the rigging without hard hats. And they don't want anyone breathing in too much salt - haven't you seen the adverts?" Nelson: "I've never heard such infamy. Break out the cannon and tell the men to stand by to engage the enemy." Hardy: "The men are a bit worried about shooting at anyone, Admiral." Nelson: "What? This is mutiny!" Hardy: "It's not that, Sir. It's just that they're afraid of being charged with murder if they actually kill anyone. There's a couple of legal-aid lawyers on board, watching everyone like hawks." Nelson: "Then how are we to sink the Frenchies and the Spanish?" Hardy: "Actually, Sir, we're not." Nelson: "We're not?" Hardy: "No, Sir. The French and the Spanish are our European partners now. According to the Common Fisheries Policy, we shouldn't even be in this stretch of water. We could get hit with a claim for compensation." Nelson: "But you must hate a Frenchman as you hate the devil...." Hardy: "I wouldn't let the ship's diversity co-ordinator hear you saying that Sir. You'll be up on disciplinary report." Nelson: "You must consider every man an enemy who speaks ill of your King." Hardy: "Not any more, Sir. We must be inclusive in this multicultural age. Now put on your Kevlar vest; it's the rules. It could save your life" Nelson: "Don't tell me - health and safety. Whatever happened to rum, sodomy and the lash?" Hardy: As I explained, Sir, rum is off the menu! And there's a ban on corporal punishment..." Nelson: "What about sodomy?" Hardy: "I believe that is now legal, Sir." Nelson: "In that case................................ kiss me, Hardy''.
------------------------------------------------------------------------- Best wishes to all our members and their families for a happy, healthy and Prosperous New Year with plenty of beer sales.
Register now for the Convention and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in March .
Happy Brewing
