AUSTRALIAN BARLEY This article haS been reproduced with the kind permission of e-Malt.com. Members are encouraged to subscribe to this excellent newsletter) Australia's barley is currently the cheapest in the world owing to a bumper crop of higher grade malting barley, ABC.net reported on December, 22.
The price is now just A$145 per tonne and grain dealer Christian Norgard hopes it's stabilised.
"It probably can't go much lower, but obviously if there is a financial crisis in Europe that will have a big impact on our market," he said.
"But with northern hemisphere, with winter crop in the ground and spring planting all starting, the price difference between Australian grain and European grain is quite significant." [Emalt.com Newsletter 51b of 23 Dec 2011]
FOSTER'S/SABMILLER
Foster's/SABMiller has announced the appointment of Ari Mervis, currently Managing Director Asia, as Managing Director Asia Pacific and Chief Executive of Foster's. Born in South Africa, in 2006/07 he helped establish Pacific Beverages (the joint venture between SABMiller and CC Amatil), and has expressed his admiration for the Foster's staff who had stayed motivated while the company was subject to a takeover bid. He said that one of SABMiller's advantages was it could adapt its overseas expertise to the local environment. Former CEO John Pollaers was replaced on Dec 16 but will remain in an advisory role as required in the transition phase in early 2012. [From Adelaide Advertiser, Dec 9, 2011]
SABMiller is yet to acquire the remaining 50% stake in Pacific Beverages from Coca Cola Amatil, which will bring all brands and operations under the CUB business from 16 January.
Pacific Beverages, which operates only in Australia and New Zealand, manufactures and exclusively distributes Bluetongue beer and other brands owned by SABMiller, including Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Miller Genuine Draft, Miller Chill, Grolsch and Pilsner Urquell.

Stella Artois, the first brand ‘swap' following Foster's acquisition by SABMiller, is moving to the Lion portfolio but the gap will not remain empty for long as Carlton United Brewers (CUB) will take over the distribution of some of SABMiller's leading international brands, including Peroni, Grolsch, Miller and Pilsner Urquell It is predicted that CUB will really push Peroni this summer. [From The Shout & Australian Brews News, Dec 19, 2011]
For local brand VB, CUB plans a $5.5m marketing campaign this summer – its costliest for many years. ‘VB is, and always will be, the best cold beer – a beer brewed to be consumed ice cold,' said Andy Meldrum, marketing GM. [From National Liquor News, Dec 2011] ************************************************************ LION
As well as welcoming Stella Artois to its portfolio, Lion will distribute specialty Belgian beers such as Hoegaarden, Leffe & Belle-Vue Kriek from April 2012. This means that all of AB-InBev's major international brands are now in Lion's portfolio for Australia and New Zealand. [From Australian Brews News, Dec 19, 2011] ************************************************************ MATILDA BAY BREWING
Outgrowing its previous home in Dandenong, Matilda Bay Brewing has introduced its new brewery in Port Melbourne Brewery to beer lovers. The 2,000 sq. metre site (previously a Cadbury's factory) will now serve as home base with the first Matilda Bay-style bar due to open early next year. Serving all the Matilda Bay favourites, there'll be some exciting brewer's specials as well as a selection of tasty snacks to match the brews. The move has seen the existing 25 hL brewery moved from Dandenong, and a few new tanks and packaging equipment added. While Fat Yak, Big Helga and Dirty Granny will continue to come out of the Cascade Brewery in Tasmania (pending any changes made by the new corporate overlords at SABMiller), the new Port Melbourne plant will produce lower volume beers such as Alpha Pale Ale and Dog bolter and will also focus on producing some new ‘smaller stuff'. [From Australian Brews News, Dec 13, 2011]

FAITH HEALING In a Sydney church on Sunday morning a preacher said, "Anyone with 'special needs' who wants to be prayed over, please come forward to the front by the altar."
With that, Leroy got in line, and when it was his turn, the Preacher asked, "Leroy, what do you want me to pray about for you?"
Leroy replied, "Preacher, I need you to pray for help with my hearing." The preacher put one finger of one hand in Leroy's ear, placed his other hand on top of Leroy's head, and then prayed and prayed and the whole congregation joined in with great enthusiasm.
After a few minutes, the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, "Leroy, how is your hearing now?"
Leroy answered, "I don't know. It ain't 'til Thursday."
************************************************************ IRISH WORKERS
Paddy McCoy, an elderly Irish farmer, received a letter from the Department for Work & Pensions stating that they suspected he was not paying his employees the statutory minimum wage and they would send an inspector to interview them. On the appointed day, the inspector turned up.
"Tell me about your staff," he asked Paddy.
"Well," said Paddy, "there's the farm hand, I pay him £240 a week, and he has a free cottage. Then there's the housekeeper. She gets £190 a week, along with free board and lodging.
There's also the half-wit.He works a 16 hour day, does 90% of the work, earns about £25 a week along with a bottle of whisky and, as a special treat, occasionally gets to sleep with my wife."
"That's disgraceful" said the inspector, "I need to interview the half-wit."
"That'll be me then," said Paddy. ************************************************************ An elderly man in Owensville , Indiana had owned a large farm for several years. He had a large pond in the back. It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over. He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, 'we're not coming out until you leave!' The old man frowned, 'I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked.' Holding the bucket up he said, 'I'm here to feed the alligator...'
Some old men can still think fast.
************************************************************ A man named Brian received a parrot from the RSPCA. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. Brian tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary.
Finally, Brian was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. Brian shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. Brian, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.
Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, Brian quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto Brian's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."
Brian was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude.
As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?"
