*A BREWERY EVENT SPONSORSHIP - A REPORT. A new report into the role of brewery sponsorship of community and public events could help the industry fight against potential legislative threats, according to The Brewers of Europe.
In regards to brewery event sponsorship, there is currently an ongoing debate with the industry on one side and NGO's on the other, a spokesperson for the organisation told BeverageDaily.com.
Although at the moment there is no EU legislation in place to eradicate or restrict such sponsorship, the European Health Forum is under discussion on the issue, he explained, with already sponsorship restrictions in certain European countries such as France, Sweden and Norway.
- The threat is only going to grow, the pressure is not going to go away, he said.
Some of the debates about brewery sponsorship are based on a supposed link between alcohol related problems and such events, however this is not necessarily the case, said the spokesperson.
The whole picture needs to be addressed, he said, for example the new study by Sponsorship Ideas suggests positives can come out of sponsorship, claiming that thousands of public events across Europe are heavily dependent on nearly 1bn of brewery funding each year.
Findings
While major high-profile sports sponsorships grab the headlines, 62 per cent of brewer-supported events take place at local and regional level, according to the report.
Of the 8,000 events which were counted as part of the study, less than 12 per cent of sponsorship went to major sports, it claims.
- The 928m funds a broad range of activities including the arts, culture, innovation and science as well as sport, sometimes even without explicit reference to the brewer sponsor, reports the study.
- This is in addition to the better-known social responsibility activities such as anti drink driving campaigns that Europe's brewers have run for decades, said The Brewers of Europe.
Although the organisation has done a lot over the last decade to address the sector's positive impact in terms of economy, it has previously lacked evidence to show how brewers contribute to the local community in this way, Pierre-Olivier Bergeron, The Brewers of Europe secretary general told this publication. FOSTER'S
Takeover moves - SABMiller made a $9.5bn bid for Foster's beer operations on June 21 which was soon rejected by Foster's board but the market reacted quickly with Foster's shares shooting up to $5.14 a three-year high. SABMiller CEO Graham Mackay said that it is early days in the process and we are seeking engagement with Foster's board with constructive discussions to see if together we can develop this proposal.' If the deal goes ahead SABMiller would need to buy Coca Cola-Amatil's interest Pacific Beverages for an agreed price between $305m and $380m - considerably more than an estimated value of CC-A's share of $95m. Earlier this month the board of Grupo Modelo SAB de CV met to seek support from its major shareholder AB Inbev before teaming up with Molson Coors (50% owned by AB Inbev) to make a bid for Foster's. However, the ongoing fractious relationship between Modelo and AB Inbev was apparently a negative for any further action and Modelo backed away from pursuing a $9b takeover. {From Adelaide Advertiser, Jun 22, Herald Sun, Jun 14 & The Age, Jun 16 via Alcohol Articles, Jun 17, 2011 & other sources] and (Australian Beverage Industry Digest 91 June 7-21).
Treasury Wine Estates
Treaury Wine Estates has joined its former parent as a potential takeover target with reports emerging that the Chinese food conglomerate, Bright Food Group is taking a close look at the vintner. Treasury, the world's second largest winemaker and owner of historic Australian brands such as Lindemans, Penfolds and Wolf Blass was part of the Foster's Group until it was spun off on May 10. Since then takeover speculation has swirled aroung bothe Treaury and Foster's Group. (From Sydney Morning Herald 4 July 11). ************************************************************ LION NATHAN
From August, Lion Nathan will be known simply as Lion and its business units will be called thus: Beer, Spirits and Wines, Australia (formerly Lion Nathan Australia); Beer, Spirits and Wines, New Zealand (formerly Lion Nathan New Zealand); Dairy and Drinks (formerly National Foods)
New names and branding have been introduced for the James Squire range of beers: The names are Nine Tails (Amber Ale), Sundown (Australian Lager), The Chancer (Golden Ale), Four Wives (Pilsener), Stow Away (IPA) and The Jack of Spades (Porter). The new names represent phases in the life of James Squire, Australia's first brewer. THE IRISH FURNITURE DEALER.
Murphy, a furniture dealer from Dublin, decided to expand the line of furniture in his store, so he decided to go to Paris to see what he could find.
After arriving in Paris, he visited with some manufacturers and selected a line that he thought would sell well back home. To celebrate the new acquisition, he decided to visit a small bistro and have a glass of wine. As he sat enjoying his wine, he noticed that the small place was quite crowded, and that the other chair at his table was the only vacant seat in the house.
Before long, a very beautiful young Parisian girl came to his table; asked him something in French (which Murphy couldn't understand); so he motioned to the vacant chair and invited her to sit down. He tried to speak to her in English, but she did not speak his language. After a couple of minutes of trying to communicate with her, he took a napkin and drew a picture of a wine glass and showed it to her. She nodded, so he ordered a glass of wine for her.
After sitting together at the table for a while, he took another napkin, and drew a picture of a plate with food on it, and she nodded. They left the bistro and found a quiet cafe that featured a small group playing romantic music. They ordered dinner, after which he took another napkin and drew a picture of a couple dancing. She nodded, and they got up to dance. They danced until the cafe closed and the band was packing up.
Back at their table, the young lady took a napkin and drew a picture of a four-poster bed. To this day, Murphy has no idea how she figured out he was in the furniture business.
Bless him. ************************************************************ GIRLS' GETAWAY Four friends spend weeks planning the perfect girl's getaway trip - shopping, casinos, massages, facials, shows .....
Two days before the group is to leave Mary's husband puts his foot down and tells her she isn't going.
Mary's friends are very upset that she can't go, but what can they do.
Two days later the three get to the hotel only to find Mary sitting in the bar drinking a glass of wine.
"Wow, how long you been here and how did you talk your husband into letting you go?"
"Well, I've been here since last night...see, yesterday evening I was sitting on the couch and my husband came up behind me and put his hands over my eyes and said 'Guess who'?"
I pulled his hands off to find all he was wearing was his birthday suit.
He took my hand and lead me to our bedroom. The room was scented with perfume, had two dozen candles and rose petals all over...on the bed, he had handcuffs and ropes! He told me to tie and cuff him to the bed, so I did. And then he said, "Now, you can do whatever you want."
So here I am.

*11 PEOPLE ... ON A ROPE* Eleven people were hanging on a rope, under a helicopter. 10 men and 1 woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all, so they decided that one had to leave, because otherwise they were all going to fall.
They weren't able to choose that person until the woman gave a very touching speech.
She said that she would voluntarily let go of the rope, because, as a woman, she was used to giving up everything for her husband and kids or for men in general, and was used to always making sacrifices with little in return.
As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping . . .. . . . ***********************************************************
