In addition one of each beer will be presented to three key importers and where applicable introductions will be made.

1. Transport Mascot to London for a case of beer or part therof (24 x 375ml or 12 x 750ml) $50 per entry
2. UK Taxes and duties will be covered also
3. Favourable entry of basic AUD$130 or 3 or more AUD$100 each
4. Representation at the GBBF and samples given to selected importers.
For example,

(b) 3 x entries sending 8 of each beer (24 x 330ml) = $350
(c) 3 x entries sending a case each (72 x 330ml) = $450

When considering how much beer to send, keep in mind, at least three (3) bottles, will be used for judging, three (3) bottles will also be passed onto UK Importers and the remaining will be served at the GBBF.

************************************************************ MASH UP: 44 NZ BREWERS COLLABORATE

If there was one road trip that would invoke jealousy amongst the nation's beer drinkers, it would have to be one that involved visiting the majority of craft breweries in the country. Two of New Zealand's leading craft brewers have done exactly this. All with the hope of putting together a series of episodes that document the excitement, passion and flavour that the beers and brewers of this fine country have to offer.

Luke Nicholas, president and founder of Epic Brewing Company in Auckland and new recruit, Kelly Ryan, who recently joined Epic after a successful brewing career with multi-award winning Thornbridge Brewery in the UK took up the challenge of visiting as many breweries as they could over a 17 day period.

Film crew in tow, they travelled the country by camper van, covering almost 4500 kilometres as they documented the current craft beer scene. Visiting breweries, sampling beers, discussing brewery history and the passion that had resulted in people from all walks of life choosing brewing as their occupation, the pair's progress was captured on camera to be used in an online video series.

Coupled with the production was the idea that all of the passion and concepts of the craft brewers be captured in a special collaboration brew that was to act as a summary of what was happening in New Zealand beer in 2011. A grand total of 44 breweries from Invercargill to Auckland were included in the project, with a bunch of them turning up for the brew day at Steam Brewery in Auckland.

The resulting beer, Mash Up, is a New Zealand Pale Ale at 6% abv that is an ode to the deliciously refreshing New Zealand hops. It uses a blend of Kiwi and British malt (many brewers are British or got their inspiration from the UK beer scene) and is touted as being the world's largest ever collaboration beer.

- We thought of contacting the Guinness Book of World Records to get this verified, but didn't want to give them too much press,” quips Nicholas.

Nicholas and Ryan are no strangers to collaboration. Having worked on joint brews both at Thornbridge in the UK and here with Epic in New Zealand, they originally discussed the idea as guest international beer judges at the World Beer Cup in Chicago in 2010.

- It sounded like an amazing concept and we hoped it would give others the chance to see how great the Kiwi brewing scene actually is,” says Nicholas.

- We both think Mash Up is a great summary of where NZ beer is at,”
states Ryan. - With the popularity of our great brewing ingredients on the rise abroad, it's definitely time that we celebrate their quality here at home.”

Let's raise our glasses to that.

EUROPE MALTING BARLEY CRISIS

A dry spring in much of Europe has sent malting barley prices shooting upwards – adding to the woes of brewers already under pressure from weak beer demand, according to analysts.

In the UK, one of the four leading European producers along with France, Germany and Denmark, spring barley prices for the coming 2011 harvest have risen from £183 a metric tonne last November to £235 in May.

Brewers spark recent jump

The dry start to the year, in the UK and France especially, has triggered this price hike, creating major uncertainty in the market. Stuart Shand, sales director at agriculture merchants Gleadell, said the market has - exploded” as one or two brewers have finally stepped in realising that - drought conditions were in fact real and ongoing”.

In recent times brewers have been holding off purchases because declining beer demand has made it difficult to predict future needs, HGCA analyst Jack Watts told this publication.

Such last minute buying practices could force some brewers to pay inflated prices in the current uncertain climate. Watts added that it is not just a question of quantity and price - the dry conditions may have compromised quality as well. Most buyers are therefore holding back if they can.

- UK maltsters have not entered the market as they know that there is little point as sellers have all but disappeared due to the concerns over expected yield,” said Shand.

Harvest should ease uncertainty

Watts added that the - situation is quite critical in the UK and Europe” and is likely to improve only when the combines begin to roll in July and the likely size of the 2011 harvest becomes clearer.

In the meantime the uncertainty and lack of trade in the market makes it difficult to reliably say where prices stand.

- Prices are now at record highs for the 2011 crop, although the price at any point in time is difficult to say with very few trades being done anywhere in the EU,” said Shand. - Actually getting a price that reflects this nominal market is not easy as buyers are rare and sellers even rarer. This makes for a market that will remain volatile until harvest.”

A middle aged woman bought a brand new sports car and took it out for its
first drive. It went like a rocket and she pushed it up to 130 kph, and was
enjoying the wind blowing through her hair. This is great she thought and
accelerated to an even higher speed. Then she looked in her rear-view
mirror, and there was a police car behind her, blue lights flashing.
I can get away from him with no problem thought the woman and she floored it
some more, and flew down the road at over 200 kph to escape being stopped.
Then she thought: What the hell am I doing? I'm too old for this kind of
thing and pulled over to the side of the road, and waited for the police car
to catch up with her. The policeman pulled in behind the sports car and
walked up on the driver's side.
"Maam my shift ends in five minutes and today is Friday the 13th. If you can
give me a good reason why you were speeding that I've never heard before,
I'll let you go."
The woman looked at the policeman and said, "Officer, last week my Husband
ran off with a policewoman, and I thought you were bringing him back."
The policeman said, "Have a nice day."

Husband Down
A husband and wife are shopping in their local Safeway store. The husband picks up a slab of beer and puts it in their cart.
'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife.
'They're on sale, only $10 for 24 cans,' he replies.
'Put them back, we can't afford them!' demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping.
A few aisles further along the woman picks up a $20 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.
What do you think you're doing?' asks the husband.
'It's my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' replies the wife.
Her husband retorts: 'So does a slab of beer, and it's half the price.'

He didn't have time to duck.

BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL MAN.

Here's to strong women everywhere.....

One night President Obama and his wife Michelle decided to do something out of routine and go for a casual dinner at a restaurant that wasn't too luxurious. When they were seated, the owner of the restaurant asked the president's secret service if he could please speak to the First Lady in private. They obliged and Michelle had a conversation with the owner.

Following this conversation President Obama asked Michelle, why was he so interested in talking to her. She mentioned that in her teenage years, he had been madly in love with her.

President Obama then said, "so if you had married him, you would now be the owner of this lovely restaurant", to which Michelle responded, "no, if I had married him, he would now be the President".
