MERGER PLAN HITCH
Kirin Holdings and Suntory Holdings have terminated merger negotiations. The talks between Kirin, Japan's largest brewery and beverages group and privately held Suntory broke down over disagreements on merger ratios and governance of the merged companies. Existing Kirin shareholders would have been diluted by 40% or more and the main Suntory owners, the Saji and Torii families, would have become the largest shareholder group in the merged entity. The families were reportedly pressing for a merger ratio that would convert their 90% of Suntory into a minimum 33.3% of Kirin-Suntory, the level at which Japanese shareholders can check major management decisions. Kirin will keep looking for mergers as part of its growth strategy' company president Kazuyasu Kato said on February 8, after Kirin ditched the $US10 billion bid for Suntory... BLUE TONGUE BREWERY Pacific Beverages' new brewery at Warnertown (NSW) will be as efficient as any other in Australia, according to MD Peter McLaughlin. Environmental sustainability formed an important part of plans approved by the NSW Government and the plant features water recycling and biogas generation from waste water. The $120m brewery, with an initial capacity of 500,000hL, is designed for easy expansion and should open in the second quarter of 2010. Responsible use of alcohol is a key focus of the company and will be tackled by a multi-faceted approach, backed by one of the largest and most comprehensive distribution networks in the country. BEER LINKED TO BETTER BONE HEALTH
Beers rich in hops and barley malts linked to better bone health By Guy Montague-Jones, 08-Feb-2010
A new study suggests that beers containing plenty of hops or pale barley malts could promote better bone health thanks to their dietary silicon content.
Previous studies have established that beer is an important source of bioavailable silicon but little research has been done to find out which beers contain the most silicon.
Bone health
Researchers from the Department of Food Science & Technology at the University of California sought to plug this scientific gap because dietary silicon appears to support bone development and fight off osteoporosis – a common disease that increases the risk of fractures.
The Californian researchers said beer contains silicon in the soluble form of orthosilicic acid (OSA), which yields 50 per cent bioavailability, making it a major contributor to silicon intake in the Western diet.
But which beers contain the most dietary silicon? Writing in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, the scientists examined a wide range of beer styles to answer this question.
Hops and malt
Beers full of hops were found to be particularly good sources of silicon. Some were found to contain as much as four times more silicon than is found in malt.
But malt may be ultimately more important overall because hops are used in much smaller quantities than grain in the brewing process.
Looking more closely at malt, the researchers said barley is a better source than wheat. As for the malting process itself, pale colored barley malts were found to contain higher levels of silicon than darker varieties because they face less heat stress.
But generally, the malt process did not cause any major changes in silicon content of barley as most of the silicon in barley is in the husk, which is not affected greatly during malting.
So making an overall comment on the best silicon option, lead author Charles Bamforth said: - Beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon.”
Bamforth and his colleagues also tested 100 commercial beers for silicon content and categorized the data according to beer style and source. The average silicon content of the beers sampled was 6.4 to 56.5 mg/L.

MEDICARE TESTS
The phone rings and the lady of the house answers, "Hello." "Mrs. Sanders, please." "Speaking." "Mrs. Sanders, this is Doctor Jones at Saint Agnes Laboratory. When your husband's doctor sent his biopsy to the lab last week, a biopsy from another Mr. Sanders arrived as well... We are now uncertain which one belongs to your husband. Frankly, either way the results are not too good." "What do you mean?" Mrs. Sanders asks nervously. "Well, one of the specimens tested positive for Alzheimer's and the other one tested positive for HIV. We can't tell which is which." "That's dreadful! Can you do the test again?" questioned Mrs.Sanders. "Normally we can, but MEDICARE will only pay for these expensive tests once." "Well, what am I supposed to do now?" "The MEDICARE Helpdesk recommend that you drop your husband off somewhere in the middle of town. If he finds his way home, don't sleep with him…” ------------------------------------------------------------------------- AMERICAN INDIAN A man asked an American Indian what was his wife's name. The Indian replied, "She called Four Horses". The man said, "That's an unusual name for your wife, but it's a beautiful one. What does it mean?"
The Old Indian answered, "It very old Indian Name.
It means: Nag ....... nag ...... nag ...... nag
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRAFFIC CAMERA A man was driving when he saw the flash of a traffic camera. He figured that his picture had been taken for exceeding the limit, even though he knew that he was not speeding.
Just to be sure, he went around the block and passed the same spot, driving even more slowly, but again the camera flashed. Now he began to think that this was quite funny, so he drove even slower as he passed the area again, but the traffic camera again flashed.
He tried a fourth time with the same result. He did this a fifth time and was now laughing when the camera flashed as he rolled past, this time at a snail's pace.
Two weeks later, he got five tickets in the mail for driving without a seat belt.
You can't save stupid.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Convention next week. Happy Brewing
