BEER & BREWING NEWS

WORLD BEER CUP

The Cup is considered by many to be the most prestigious beer competition in the world. Results announced this month at the Craft Brewers Conference in Chicago indicate that brewers from six continents earned awards. This year, 642 breweries from 44 countries entered 3,330 beers in 90 beer style categories. Three Australian brewers were among the medal winners at the Cup: Lion Nathan's Malt Shovel Brewery won gold for its New Norcia Abbey Ale, Sydney's Redoak won silver for its Redoak Bitter and Ballarat's O'Brien Brewing won silver for its gluten-free O'Brien Brown Ale. The Australian contingent joined breweries from 18 other countries to claim medals in what this year became the world's largest-ever commercial beer competition. ALCOHOL POLICY
Blood alcohol limit and trading hours.

No further advice is yet available about moves in QLD to reduce the legal drivers' blood alcohol limit to 0.02% but authorities in NSW have advised that there is no intention of considering a reduction in that state. The QLD Government is, however, considering a recommendation from its Law, Justice and Safety Committee to reduce trading hours for bottle-shops and pubs. FOSTER'S GROUP
Foster's beer market share down in the first three months of this year – AC Nielsen.
A slowdown in beer sales at Foster's is expected to prompt a major reinvestment program that could dampen earnings growth, The Australian communicated on April, 30.

According to market research firm AC Nielsen, Foster's share of the Australian beer market was 49.9 per cent in the first three months of 2010, down from 55 per cent in 2005 and the first time it has slipped below 50 per cent.

The decline at Foster's coincided with a general slackening in liquor market growth, with annual sales up just 1 per cent overall for the first quarter of the calendar year, compared to 6 per cent growth for the same period in 2009, when UBS analyst Lindy Newton said the fiscal stimulus, a hot summer, new products and the need to drown recession-induced sorrows had boosted sales.

About two percentage points of the market share loss could be attributed to Lion Nathan's 2008 acquisition of Tasmanian brewer Boags, which was formerly distributed by Foster's.

While Foster's VB brand was still the country's biggest seller, accounting for 15.1 per cent of sales by volume and 14.7 per cent by value, it was in decline with volumes down by 8.4 per cent in the first quarter this year.

COCA COLA AMATIL
CCA have appointed John Murphy, who left Foster's Australia as MD in 2006 - after 27 years with the group - to the new post of MD, Licensed/Alcohol for CCA Australasia from Jul 1. The new Bluetongue brewery at Warnertown NSW is due to open in June and CCA‘s stated strategy is ‘to dominate the premium market in Australia'. Currently, CCA has only 2% of the premium market, which, in turn, is about 9% of total beer sales but growing rapidly. Analysts consider that the push for dominance by CCA will be neither cheap nor easy and it is generally agreed that any talk of CCA acquiring or merging with Foster's is deterred by the state of the latter's wine business. COOPERS
Melanie Cooper, daughter of Bill Cooper, has become the first female director of Coopers. Bill retired from the board a few months ago after 40 years as a director, including 25 years as MD (1977 – 2002). Melanie, currently Cooper's financial accountant, has spent 16 years with the family concern, including time as company secretary. [from Food Australia, May 2010]

BREWERS EDUCATION

BREWER'S EDUCATION CORNER

**A middle aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience. Seeing
God she asked "Is my time up?"
God said, "No, you have another 43
years, 2 months and 8 days to live.

**Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the
hospital and have a facelift, liposuction, and a tummy tuck. She even had someone come in
and change her hair color.
Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well make the most of it.

After her last operation, she was released from
the hospital. While crossing the street on her way home, she was killed by an ambulance.

Arriving in front of God, she demanded, "I thought
you said I had another 40 years? Why didn't you pull me from out of the path of the ambulance?"

God replied: "I didn't recognize you."**

And Finally a Blond Joke

A Blonde was sent on her way to Heaven. Upon her arrival, a concerned St Peter met her at the Pearly Gates.

'I'm sorry,' St Peter said; 'But Heaven is suffering from an overload of goodly souls and we have been forced to put up an Entrance Exam for
new arrivals to ease the burden of Heavenly Arrivals.'

'That's cool' said the blonde, 'What does the Entrance Exam consist of?

'Just three questions' said St Peter.

'The first,' said St Peter, 'Is, which two days of the week start with the letter 'T' '?

The second is 'How many seconds are there in a year?'

The third is 'What was the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda?'

Now,' said St Peter, 'Go away and think about those questions and when I call upon you, I shall expect you to have those answers for me.'

So the blonde went away and gave those three questions some considerable thought (I expect you to do the same).

The following morning, St Peter called upon the blonde and asked if she had considered the questions, to which she replied, 'I have.'

'Well then,' said St Peter, 'Which two days of the week start with the letter T?'

The blonde said, 'Today and Tomorrow.'

St Peter pondered this answer for some time, and decided that indeed the answer can be applied to the question.

'Well then, could I have your answer to the second of the three questions?' 'How many seconds in a year?'

The Blonde replied, 'Twelve!'

'Only twelve?' exclaimed St Peter, 'How did you arrive at that figure?'

'Easy,' said the blonde, 'there's the second of January, the second of February, right through to the second of December, giving a total of
twelve seconds.'

St Peter looked at the blonde and said, 'I need some time to consider your answer before I can give you a decision.' And he walked away
shaking his head.

A short time later, St Peter returned to the Blonde. 'I'll allow the answer to stand, but you need to get the third and final question
absolutely correct to be allowed into Heaven. Now, can you tell me the answer to the name of the swagman in Waltzing Matilda?'

The blonde replied: 'Of the three questions, I found this the easiest to answer.'

'Really!' exclaimed St Peter, 'And what is the answer?'

'It's Andy.'

'Andy??'

'Yes, Andy,' said the blonde.

This totally floored St Peter, and he paced this way and that, deliberating the answer. Finally, he could not stand the suspense any longer, and turning to the blonde, asked 'How in God's name did you arrive at THAT answer?'

'Easy' said the blonde, 'Andy sat, Andy watched, Andy waited til his Billy boiled.'

And the blonde entered Heaven....
