WORLD
Quality malting barley in short supply, brewers show little buying interest

Malting barley of good quality will be in short supply in the beginning of the campaign 2011/12. It remains to be seen, whether the Australian and Argentinean crops can reverse the present picture, industry analysts reported earlier in October.

In the EU and in Russia crops were damaged by drought early in spring and summer and by long-lasting and heavy rains at harvest. Only parts of the crops in France, Germany, the U.K., Denmark, Sweden and Russia are of acceptable quality. The major problems are very high protein contents, fusarium and other weather damage, also the risk of poor germination. Initial malt tests revealed also a great risk of gushing.

Markets have nevertheless declined in recent weeks, partly in sympathy with other grain markets, but also as consequence of little buying interest. Brewers purchased only small quantities of crop 2011 malt/barley or abstained completely to-date.

AUSTRALIA
High hopes for resurgence of barley industry in Queensland
As growers prepare for harvest in the coming weeks, there are high hopes for a resurgence of the Queensland barley industry, with local demand for malt varieties expected to double this year, Queensland Country Life reported on October, 21.

The Barrett Burston Malting (BBM)-owned malt house at the GrainCorp Pinkenba (Brisbane) port terminal began operations at the start of the year and has doubled the need for malt barley in Queensland, with plans to process 100,000 tonnes of barley per annum to service Carlton and United Breweries and the export market.

Previously, Queensland growers serviced malt houses at Toowoomba and Tamworth.

With more than 80 percent of barley grown in Queensland being feed grade, the search is now on for a malting variety which suits local conditions, to meet the growing demand.

As a result of the current local supply shortage, malt varieties are attracting price premiums up to A$60/t above feed-grade barley, more than double the usual malting premium.

Barley plantations have expanded across Queensland with growers hoping the feed variety Shepherd, proving well suited to local conditions, could be recognised as malting barley.

FOSTER'S

Foster's Group Ltd said it expects the beer category will return to moderate growth once the current economic uncertainty passes, as Australia's largest brewer prepares to be taken over by SABMiller, Reuters reported on October, 25 .

Foster's, maker of Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught and Pure Blonde, said beer volume has declined in line with the rest of the local market, though there has been some improvement in consumer confidence in recent months.

In September, Foster's agreed to accept a sweetened A$12 billion ($10.4 billion) offer after a three-month battle by SABMiller to win over management. The A$5.10 per share offer was an A$0.20 per share increase on a previous bid.

OBITUARY

Dr Brian Blenkinship

BRIAN KEITH BLENKINSHIP
OBITUARY

Brian Blenkinship was born in the village of Great Ryburgh near Fakenham in the County of Norfolk, England on November 24th 1927. His father, Anthony Blenkinship was a representative of a small flour milling company in Fakenham. The mill was located on the river Wensum and originally powered by the waterwheel before electric motors were introduced. Anthony subsequently took over the once grown seed section of the business, buying barley, wheat, oats mustard etc from farmers for cleaning and on-selling as seed. His grandfather on his mother's side Bill Grimson was the maltster at the malting plant of F & G Smith in Ryburgh. He had trained both his sons as maltsters. Billy was the maltster at F&G Smith's plant at East Dereham, Norfolk, and Herbert at a brewery in Bristol. This family association made the brewing industry an obvious choice for Brian's career.

Awarded a Brewers Society Scholarship Brian studied Industrial Biochemistry for a First Class Degree at the University of Birmingham in 1948 and followed with post graduate study for the University's Diploma in Malting and Brewing.

His first job was with Charrington & Co. in London, then one of the UK's largest brewers, as Assistant Chief Chemist then transferring to become a shift brewer.

In 1952 Brian was offered the opportunity to set up Quality Control and Development laboratories for the South African Breweries Ltd with its then 7 plants throughout Southern Africa headquartered in Johannesburg. He married Doreen Brown and they sailed for South Africa where they lived for 10 years and where both their children, Julian and Nicolette were born. The South African Breweries allowed good overseas travel opportunities and Brian was able to materially increase his brewing knowledge and build up a respected department, imparting a sound training to a number of staff who continued to enlarge the reputation and quality of the QC and research and development unit as the company grew to become one of the world's largest brewers.

In 1962 he moved to Auckland, New Zealand to take up the position of Assistant General Manager Technical with Dominion Breweries, then the leader in full scale Continuous Fermentation. The job envisaged worldwide promotion of the System but snags with patents quickly frustrated these efforts and Brian moved to New York in 1963 to join Consulting Company Schwarz Services International. During 6 years there he contributed to a number of published papers and was active in the American Society of Brewing Chemists, chairing the Technical Committee and becoming Program Chairman at the Societies 1967 Annual Convention in Los Angeles. He lectured at the United States Brewers Academy and became its Director in 1969.

Shortly thereafter Tooheys Ltd in Sydney, Australia offered the job of Group Quality Manager in 1969 which Brian accepted, subsequently becoming Assistant General Manager Technical.Brian was intimately involved in the development of Hunter Brewery and the consolidation of brewing operations at Auburn Brewery. The Technical Department under Brian's stewardship became world class. He was a member of the Australian Associated Brewers Technical Committee and the Malting and Brewing Barley Technical Committee and his contributions to both committees was invaluable.Brian always supported the Asia-Pacific Section of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD), attending and presenting papers at its conventions.

Brian's first wife Doreen succumbed to Cancer in 1976 and he married Colleen Troth in 1980 who had two children of her own, Mark and Jason.

Since retiring from full time work in 1991 he represented Lupofresh Ltd, buying and exporting hops and importing hop extracts and also lecturing in the Brewing Courses at Ballarat University

He became a life member of the Institute Of Brewing and was named a Fellow of the Institute. He was particularly proud to be invited to the Asia Pacific Convention in Surfers Paradise in 2010 to be honoured having completed 60 years membership of the Institute. He was at that time the longest serving member in Australia.

One of Brian's great loves was sailing He had four yachts over the years sailing Sydney Harbour, Pittwater and Lake Macquarie. Lawn Bowls and Tennis were added to sporting activities in retirement.

Brian beat Oesophageal Cancer for 4 ½ years after tumour removal in 2007, but Cancer returned in 2011 and Brian passed away on Wednesday 5th October 2011.

BREWER'S EDUCATION CORNER

A TRUE YORKSHIREMAN !

A Leeds man walks into a High Street bank & asks for a loan.
He tells the bank officer he is going to Australia on business for two
weeks & needs to borrow £5,000.

The bank officer tells him that the bank will need some form of
security for the loan, so the Yorkshire lad hands over the keys and
documents of a new Ferrari parked on the street in front of the bank.
He produces the Log Book & everything checks out.
The loan officer agrees to accept the car as collateral for the loan.

The bank manager & its officers all enjoy a good laugh at the
rough-looking Yorkshireman for using a £120,000 Ferrari as collateral
against a £5000 loan.
The bank manager then instructs an employee of the bank to drive the
Ferrari into the bank's underground garage, where he parks it.

Two weeks later, the man returns, repays the £5,000 & the interest of
£15.41.
The bank officer says to the Yorkshireman, "Sir, we are very happy to
have had your business, & this transaction has worked out very nicely,
but we are a little puzzled...while you were away, we checked you out
further & found that you are a multi-millionaire.
What puzzles us is, why would you bother to borrow "£5,000"?

The Yorkshireman replies: "Where else in Leeds can I park my car for
two weeks for only £15.41 & expect it to be there when I return"

Ah, the mind of a true Yorkshireman....

INNOCENCE
Miss Beatrice, the church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married.
She was admired for her sweetness and kindness.
One afternoon, the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint sitting room.
She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea.
As he sat facing her old Hammond organ,
the young minister noticed a cute glass bowl sitting on top of it.
The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated, of all things, a condom!
When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat.
The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist.
'Miss Beatrice', he said,
'I wonder if you would tell me about this?'
Pointing to the bowl.
'Oh, yes,' she replied, 'Isn't it wonderful?
I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground.
The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet, and that it would prevent the spread of disease.

Do you know I haven't had the flu All winter'
