BEER & BREWING NEWS

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION -AUSTRALIA

Slightly more alcohol was available as consumption patterns changed, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures: A total of 184m L of pure alcohol was available for consumption in Australia in the last financial year - almost 1% more than the previous year's 182.7m L.

Beer represented 43.3%, wine 37.2%, spirits 12.5% and pre-mixed drinks 7% of pure alcohol available for drinking in 2009-10. Of beer types, low strength was the big loser, dropping from 14.11L per capita in 2005-06 to 8.06L in 2009-10. Mid-strength beer jumped from an average 14.84L per capita five years ago to 16.15L. Full strength beer grew from 78.70L to 79.09L in the same period. The overall dip continues the long-term decline in beer consumption in Australia. BEER SALES DECLINE

The 2011 Wider Beverage Report, recently released by Nielsen, shows that the overall Australian beverage market is trending down in both volume and value with total sales for 2010 falling for the first year since 2006. Packaged beer, which accounts for one dollar in every four spent on beverages, is a key component of the decline and low-carb and premium beers are no longer seen as growth items.
Dedicated Aussie beer drinkers could be worried by the defection of David Boon - legendary cricketer and beer consumer - to be the face of the extensive ‘Over Beer' campaign recently launched by Canadian Club whisky. Maker - Beam Global claims that ‘it is not about knocking beer but simply offering Canadian Club & Dry as a refreshing alternative.' COMPANY NEWS

FOSTER'S

On August 17 SABMiller launched a $9.5bn hostile take-over of Foster's, directing the bid directly at shareholders by offering $4.90 per share. Sources suggest that finance for the bid is provided via banking advisers JP Morgan, Royal Bank of Scotland and Morgan Stanley and, to quote one account, ‘it is hoped that a mildly improved offer will be sufficient to convince shareholders as Foster's unveils its reform agenda'. Regarding this reform, since the demerger of the beer and wine businesses in May, Foster's CEO John Pollaers has pushed through a string of key staffing and marketing changes across the group. Most departments, from marketing to HR were involved, and the group also has a new logo and slogan, ‘Raised in Friendship', to focus all on the challenges ahead. Pollaers aims ‘to make the company a more disciplined consumer business and to be a one that is more flexible, more agile and more competitive … such actions start with changing the way people look and feel about themselves.'
SABMiller, which sees the Aussie brewing industry as ‘stable and profitable with opportunities for further growth', confounded experts by announcing the bid for Foster's before releasing its latest results on August 24. The FGL board reacted by declaring that the bid significantly undervalued the company and it would unanimously recommend that shareholders reject the bid. By making another ‘low' bid, SABMiller has ensured that a bitter and possibly long battle will ensue. FGL shares closed at $4.93 on Friday Aug 19 after reaching $5.00 during the day; some analysts consider that $5.20 - 5.60 would excite shareholders and FGL says it ‘may engage at $5.50 - $6.00 a share.' COOPERS

The installation of a new 410hL mash vessel at its Regency Park SA brewery will enable Coopers to process up to 12 brews per day (up from 8/day) and thus provide a significant increase in production. Provision was made for the second mash tun when the brewhouse was built a decade ago and the new vessel was lifted in place through the roof. [From Australian Beverage Industry Digest No 95]

STEAM BREWING COMPANY

Steam Brewing Company in NZ is going through some exciting times and had three candidates sitting the IBD exams this year and would like to congratulate them on their well-deserved pass marks.
Jason Subritzky passed the IBD General Certificate in Packaging earlier this year. Tom Ashton passed both the IBD Module 1 and 2 (Materials & Wort and Yeast & Beer). Sam Williamson passed his final exam (Diploma Module 3 – Process and Packaging Technology) thus completing the IBD Diploma in Brewing.
- I am truly proud of the boys and I appreciate the hard work they put in” says GM Nigel Shaw - It's great to have highly-trained brewers who can slot into each-others roles without an impact on quality”
- There are not many people in NZ able to use the post-nominals 'Dipl. Brew' and they are all quite intelligent” says Sam. He is extremely pleased to have attained the qualification and looks forward to receiving the official ‘IBD Diploma in Brewing Tankard'. He plans to - drink a high-quality Cock & Bull beer from it, then take a year off studying to have some fun with my family". - That may be only a small drink” adds Shane Morley (Dipl. Brew, M. Brew) - My Masters tankard came from the UK as flat as a pancake”.
Tom is looking forward to completing his IBD diploma next year. - Tom is a smart guy” says Sam - these are intense exams and to pass two in one year takes massive brain-power.” Jason's excellent result adds to his decades of experience. - It's good to get a bit of paper to make it official.” He plans to start his IBD Diploma in Packaging next year.
Steam Brewing Company must have one of the most highly-qualified teams in the NZ brewing community. They have completed four General Certificates, two Brewing Diplomas and a Masters in Brewing between their 6 full-time staff. And that only includes the qualifications achieved from the IBD. This coupled with the company's comprehensive list of accreditation (and beer-awards tally) has gained them significant credibility in the contract packaging industry.
Steam Brewing Company is a custom beverage team empowered by our brewing expertise. Our facility is able to blend, brew, package and pasteurize a wide variety of cold beverages and pack sizes.

REGIONAL NEWS

SECTION AND REGIONAL MEETINGS

NSW MEETINGS.
As mentioned last month there are 2 functions being arranged in NSW for the rest of this year.

Our annual Octoberfest function will be held at Tooheys at Lidcombe on 26th October. The format will be very similar to last year's and brewers are invited to begin creating their own special "Octoberfest brew" to be judged on the night. Presenters will have the opportunity to introduce and explain their beers to the Members present. This was an extremely successful function last year so mark the date in your diary. A notice with further details will be issued to NSW members shortly.

The usual NSW Christmas party is once again being arranged at the Festival Cafe in Darling Harbour - an extremely popular venue. The date has been set down for 25th November. A beautiful warm summer night with views over Darling Harbour and the usual great food and an interesting selection of beers will ensure a great night.

Daddy, how was I born?

A little boy goes to his father and asks 'Daddy, how was I born?

The father answers, 'Well, son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway! Your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mom and we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, and googled each other. There your mother agreed to a download from my memory stick. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button ,nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared that said:

'You got Male!

THE UNSTOPPABLE VIRUS

I thought you would want to know about this e-mail virus. Even the most advanced programs from Norton or McAfee cannot take care of this one. It Appears to affect those who were born prior to 1960 ..

Symptoms:

1.. Causes you to send the same e-mail twice. Done that!

2. Causes you to send a blank e-mail ! That too!

3. Causes you to send e-mail to the wrong person..yep!
4. Causes you to send it back to the person who sent it to you. Aha!

5. Causes you to forget to attach the attachment. Well darn!

6. Causes you to hit "SEND" before you've finished. Oh, no not again!

7. Causes you to hit "DELETE" instead of "SEND.." And I just hate that!

8. Causes you to hit "SEND" when you should "DELETE." Oh No!

IT IS CALLED THE "C-NILE VIRUS."
Hmmm.....Have I already sent this to you, or did you send it to me?

MAN-FLU VIRUS - THE FACTS
1. Man-Flu is more painful than childbirth. This is an irrefutable scientific fact*.
*(Based on a survey of over 100,000 men.)

2. Man-Flu is not 'just a cold'. It is a condition so severe that the germs from a single Man-Flu sneeze could wipe out entire tribes of people living in the rainforest. And probably loads of monkeys too.

3. Women do not contract Man-Flu. At worst they suffer from what is medically recognised as a 'Mild Girly Sniffle' – which, if a man caught it, he would still be able to run, throw a ball, tear the phone book in half and compete in all other kinds of manly activities.

4. Men do not 'moan' when they have Man-Flu. They emit involuntary groans of agony that are entirely in proportion to the unbearable pain they are in.

5. Full recovery from Man-Flu will take place much quicker if their simple requests for care, sympathy and regular cups of tea are met. Is that really so much to ask? Florence Nightingale would have done it.

6. More men die each year from MFN (Man-Flu Neglect) than lots and lots of other things. (Like rabbit attacks or choking on toast, being attacked by sharks, being run over by a bus or being hit by an ATM).

7. Men suffering from Man-Flu want nothing more than to get out of bed and come to work, but they are too selfless to risk spreading this awful condition amongst their friends and colleagues. In this sense, they are the greatest heroes this country has ever known.

8. In 1982 scientists managed to simulate the agonising symptoms of full blown Man-Flu in a female chimp. She became so ill that her head literally fell off.

9. Man-Flu germs are more powerful than He-Man, The Thundercats and The A-Team combined. They are too strong for weak, nasty tasting 'lady medicines' like Lemsip, so don't bother trying to force them on a victim of Man-Flu.

Every minute in this country one man is struck down by Man-Flu. Women, all we ask is that each of you offers them a cup of tea, some kind words and your undivided attention and care. Then maybe, just maybe, we'll beat this monstrous disease together...

THE VENTRILOQUIST

A young ventriloquist is touring Essex and, one night, he's doing a
show in a small town. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb
blonde jokes.

Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and
starts shouting, "I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes.
What makes you think you can stereotype women that way?
What does the colour of a person's hair have to do with her worth as a
human being? It's men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work
and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people.
Its people like you that make others think Blondes are thick!
You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only
blondes, but women in general...pathetically all in the name of humour!"

The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde yells,

"You stay out of this! I'm talking to that little creep on your lap!"
